What is an “OWI”, “DUI” or “DWI”?

Iowa OWI is defined as Operating While Intoxicated. All three acronyms stand for the same thing, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of something. In Iowa, it is not illegal to drink an alcoholic beverage then drive. It is illegal in Iowa to operate a motor vehicle and at the same time have an open container of an alcoholic beverage. It is also illegal if at the time you are operating the vehicle, your BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) exceeds .08. So basically, if you drink three or four cans of beer in one hour, you may exceed the limit .08 limit. Many factors play into this including, but not limited to, the alcohol content of the beverages; what you have had to eat; your body mass and time elapsed.

This is a serious charge. Make no mistake about it. The consequences will last for years and a conviction may land you in jail. The fines and costs rack up quickly. Your car insurance rates will rise. Having a conviction on your record may thwart your travel to foreign countries. Employers take a dim view and may not hire you. Don’t be in a hurry to run to the courthouse and plead guilty. Get some free advice from one of our lawyer specialists. Call them up. Tell them what happened and ask if they can help you.

Administrative Sanctions are imposed by the Iowa DOT and involve your driving privileges. Criminal Sanctions are what you will face in court.
