What is SR22 insurance?

It is usually known as “high risk” insurance. It is required by Iowa law for you to own, drive, operate motor vehicles. You cannot obtain a license to drive or plates for your vehicle without proof of SR22 insurance being on file with the Iowa D.O.T. If you allow your policy to lapse or cancel, the provider of coverage must notify the State of Iowa. The State will then send you a notification of the revocation of your right to drive and register motor vehicles.

Do not transfer title of your vehicle to a friend to try and avoid the SR22 requirements. Doing so will transfer ownership of the vehicle and thus, you may not be able to get your car back from your friend when it’s time to pony up. There is nothing to keep the friend from selling and/or wrecking your car.
